We are currently working toward making Claire’s room more personalized for her. She has been asking for her room to be painted and re-done since we did Iain’s room last year. Personally, I’ve resisted doing much with the house since we were thinking about moving while the possibility was out there. However we’ve since decided to stay here indefinitely so now I’m thinking about the changes I want to do to make it more comfortable and homey for us.
As I go through color schemes with Claire and ideas together, no one can miss her excitement and the way her eyes brighten at the coming changes. I can’t help but think about how her joy for this affects me as well.
It also causes me to reflect on how other people’s stories, their walks with Jesus – especially when they are seeking Him intensely – and how they share what God is teaching them and how He is growing them, additionally affects those around them.
You see, when people are active in their walks with God, He changes them.
Not only that but He causes excitement and change in other people as well. It’s quite a sight to see! It is so rejuvenating to my own walk because it’s simply encouraging. The same Holy Spirit at work in them is at work in me, and often sharing these deeper stories with each other enables me to feel His softening of my heart, to take heed of His voice and listen to conviction or growing passion for the Lord.
One of my most favorite things to hear is what God is doing with someone else. Not only does it brings glory to God, but it is a catalyst for spreading the message of grace and redemption.
I have a friend named Lana. From the moment we first met, it was easy for us to feel connected to one another. Every single time we get together, we completely skip the small talk and go straight for depth. We share our struggles. We share our sins. We share how God is growing us and molding us to be more Christ-like. I call or text her for prayer and encouragement and she calls/texts me for the same. We sharpen one another with wisdom from the Word and it is so very refreshing.
In fact we do this so much that when it comes to surface-level knowledge about one another, we barely know anything!
She doesn’t know my favorite restaurant or my favorite color. She didn’t know that I was a rock climber and martial artist. I didn’t know simple things about her either because we share deeply with each other every time we speak.
I have only a few friends like Lana, who truly get real with me and I with them. Not everyone needs to know this stuff but I’ve come to learn that genuine depth is so much more rewarding than re-hashing the weather or diet several times over.
Deeper communication with fellow Christians is often used to spur one another on toward love and good deeds (Hebrews 10:24-25) and it encourages us to praise God for these friendships that press us toward the Cross (Philemon 1:4-7).
My desire is to be constantly growing in my walk, but to also share what He’s doing in me with others. I want to be refreshing to other people’s souls, not for my glory but for the work and glory of Him who saves & sanctifies us!
Today I want to challenge you to share what God is really teaching you with someone.
Go deeper than surface level and help someone know you a little more, even if that someone is a long-time friend.
Potentially it will ignite in them a desire to reflect on what God is doing with them too!
