I absolutely love this book! Aimed for children aged 4-8, The Knight and the Firefly by Tara McClary Reeves & Amanda Jenkins is a wonderful book about a little boy named Oliver who goes on valiant bug-defending adventures by day but struggles with fear at night.
Based on Psalm 91, his firefly friend Phineas, encourages Oliver with the Word of God – reciting for him ways in which God is protecting him and instilling courage and trust in the promises of God. Phineas’ speaking truth to Oliver relieves his fear and helps him to be brave and get the rest he needs to face the new day.
Included in the back is “Parent Connection”, a guide on how to help a parent’s conversation with their child about fear and trusting God for protection. It also includes a memory verse: “God will cover you with His feather; you will take refuge under His wings. His faithfulness will be a protective shield.” — Psalm 91:4. There is also a craft for the child to make wings and write the Bible verse on, and then hang them over their bed as a visual reminder of God’s promise.
We got this book yesterday and it’s the only one Claire wants me to read to her, I think I’ve read it at least a dozen times already but it’s great to hear her reciting the premise of the book – that God protects us and that we can find shelter in Him from our fears!
I highly encourage parents to check this book out, it’s awesome!
