I’ve shared many times over about my passion for helping rescue victims of human trafficking, specifically I am drawn toward child victims of sexual slavery and abuse. The prominence of this issue, the black market for prostitution, and the demand of child sex slaves causes me to weep for our world. I simply cannot fathom the depth of sin & darkness in someone’s heart that would enable them to victimize another person in that way; it’s devastating to themselves and especially to the victim. As far as social justice goes I am wholeheartedly on board with the cause to stop human sex trafficking and slavery.
No one is useless in this world who lightens the burdens of another.” – Charles Dickens
My sister Rebekah recently shared with me this video (embedded below for your convenience to view here) about a project to help bring awareness to the issue. It seeks to combat sexual slavery by reaching the root of the problem – men’s hearts. The sickness of sinful hearts that thrive on using and abusing people for sexual pleasure. I greatly admire the minds behind this project. I urge you to view the video (be warned that there is some graphic content but nothing is wholly shown). Examine your heart, wrestle with yourself on where you stand with this issue. Is it merely something that happens but that you are removed from and therefore have no need to enter? Or is it a problem in our society and across the globe, and an area in which even the smallest action may be pertinent for you to take?
Give justice to the weak and the fatherless; defend the right of the afflicted and the destitute. Rescue the weak and the needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked. They have neither knowledge nor understanding, they walk about in darkness; all the foundations of the earth are shaken.” – Psalm 82:3-5
Hearing of kids (boys and girls, ages 2-17) being kidnapped from their front yards or from school grounds and then trafficked by pimps where they face being raped up to 20 times a day for however many years they are enslaved angers me like nothing else does. Hearing of teens who got involved with the wrong crowd and wound up beaten and bruised because they didn’t bring enough money back from their “John” makes me weep hysterically. Hearing of girls chained up in large wooden boxes or clustered together in basements, naked & sitting in their own feces while awaiting their next rapists makes me want to vomit. THIS IS NOT OK! These people need rescued from their hell. I pray for these victims, I pray for unknown masses of children, women and men who are being held against their will and abused every single day. I pray for their rescue. I pray for their redemption. I pray that they will not be overcome by this darkness and that someone will see what is happening to them and help them. These kids need to know that what happened to them does not define them, nor does it reflect the real love and tenderness that Jesus so desperately wants them to experience – that He died to offer them.
And so do their abusers and traffickers. I am not quite there yet, where I am able to pray for the perpetrators, rapists, abusers, and traffickers but I hope to be someday. I know God can change them and that’s the only way things like this will ever change. It’s the only way to stop, or at least slow, the demand for sexual slavery, pornography, prostitution, and human trafficking. God help us!
For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.” – Ephesians 6:12
May we never get so comfortable in our little lives that we forget there are children being enslaved to such degrees. May we never be so absorbed with ourselves that we refuse to be observant of our surroundings and potentially miss a vital plea to be rescued. May we never forget that Jesus’ heart breaks for the victim, the abused, the destitute, the “thrown away”, the trafficked; as well as the abusers, the traffickers, the criminals, and the immoral. May He bring redemption and healing to this ugliness, only He can.
