Number 12 – Describe a typical day in your current life.
We are a family of routine. We all thrive when we knows what’s going on. Typically our days are very much the same. We’ve usually got a trip somewhere planned about once a month that’s thrown in there but here’s what a normal day pretty much looks like right now. Just to be transparent, it kills me that I can’t put our actual routine with timeframes on here. I am that detail-oriented that I truly want to but I must refrain for the safety of my kids & home (not everyone needs to know exact times that we do things throughout any given day).
Early Morning – I get up to have coffee and quiet time. Paul’s usually up within half an hour to shower before the kids get up. The only times I don’t get up before everyone is if by some miracle I get to sleep in or someone else has the kids so I get to sleep in. It just takes me longer to wake up that way.
Morning – Kids get up, we all have breakfast together and get ready for the day. Paul’s such a wonderful help before he heads to work. We always give Daddy hugs & kisses and wave goodbye to him out the front window as he heads off to work. Our mornings differ each day; we may head to the gym, run errands, go to MOPS or a play date, etc or just hang out and play at home. We like to go outside and find sticks and leaves and flowers and bugs, etc. We love to play, read, paint, learn how to scissors, watch a show, do some cooking and cleaning, or “school” (what Claire calls her school are games that help her learn to read like flashcards, along with the “Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons” that I’ve been working with her on, or ABCMouse.com).
Mid-day – Both kids go down for a nap after lunch. I will either work on cleaning the house, prepping dinner or other meals for the week, do some writing, or just veg-out and watch a movie while drinking hot cocoa. It all depends on what I feel like that day, unless there’s some kind of deadline or event that dictates how I use this time.
Afternoon – Both kids wake up and we have a snack. I usually let them watch a small show, 20 mins in length) during their afternoon snack. Right now we like “What’s in the Bible?” and “Super Why”. We will play and then start getting things cleaned up for Daddy’s return home and for dinner.
Welcome Daddy home & Dinner – Sometimes simultaneously, then it’s either play time or we go somewhere like to the library or Menards or do something else we want to do until…
Bath-time for Iain – We’ve come to find that the kids don’t do well bathing together, no matter what we do to make bad habits stop so we need to bathe them separately. I think they both just need some space from each other and this is that time besides sleeping.
Iain’s bedtime routine while Claire bathes and then it’s her bedtime routine. Both kids are usually down and quiet for the rest of the night so we get to do whatever we want. Sometimes it’s projects or chores together, other times we do our own things, or one of us might be out for an event. We also like to use this time to play a game together or to watch a show/movie together, with popcorn, ice cream and something hot to drink.
Finally, it’s our bedtime routine.
